Once upon a time
there was a young fellow named Charles
who fell in love with a girl.
      her eyes were bright,
      her hair was fair,
      her voice was sweet -
but she didn't love Charles back.
                and he suffered.
so he went to his friend, who was a doctor, and said:
     "why don't you part
     me with my heart,
     my friend?
     i hurt, i ache,
     i want the pain
     to end".
and his friend, who was a doctor,
               opened his chest
               and took out his heart,
               and having no rest
for a day and a night
               he sewed and he cut
               he sewed and he cut.
at dawn of the other day
he went to his friend, who was a blacksmith, and said:
          "oh forge, oh forge,
          so in one big gorge
          in one big glut
          Charles can get his new
          metallic heart
          to live again,
          to feel no pain -
strike while the iron is hot!"
and his friend, who was a blacksmith,
                    took the hammer of his.
for a night and a day
                    he forged and he steeled
                    he forged and he steeled.
for a night and a day
                    the young fellow lay
                    as cold and as pale
                    as if he'd passed away.
at sunset of the third day
     the doctor came back home
put the iron heart in place
               and sewed Charles' chest up
               embroidered it smartly -
               oh, how smart!
               in silk and in silver
in gold and in lace -
               and the iron heart
               started beating hard
               and reddenned Charles' pale face.
"God bless you,
dearest of friends", -
said Charles at parting one.
"my faithful friend,
beloved friend,
i will not ever feel this pain,
i will not ever hurt again,
i will since now in peace remain", -
he said.
     he smiled and went away.
the next day Eric came.
